Born in Bay City, Michigan and raised in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Madonna moved to New York City for a career in modern dance. After performing as member of the pop musical groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she released her self-titled debut album in 1983, and then produced three consecutive number-one studio albums on the Billboard 200 in the 1980s.
Madonna is known for her works that explore religious symbolism and sexual themes which also drew criticism from the Vatican in the late 1980s.
"Like a Virgin" is the first single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from the album of the same name and was released on November 6, 1984 by Sire Records.
The music video, directed by Mary Lambert, was shot in Venice, Italy and partly in New York City during the summer of 1984. It shows Madonna dancing on a gondola, and running around in a wedding dress intercut with shots of a panting lion. The video's MTV world premiere took place on November 13, 1984, and became an instant hit.}
